Bachelor bucks, summer wildflowers and fish too!

Out and about in their sleek summer coats and new set of velvety growing antlers, bucks form bachelor groups. It’s a good time of year to get out and check out this year’s crop of antlered ones. These buck groups won’t be so tolerant of each other when the fall mating season arrives. The female deer are still a bit solitary and suspicious, not wanting to reveal the location of their fast growing, spotted and still yet suckling fawns. All that is amidst a colorful array of su...

Ron’s Ramblings

Southern West Virginia has produced some coaching geniuses over the years, particularly in basketball. I hesitate to name any since I would undoubtedly leave some out who are deserving to be included.Nevertheless, everyone knows how talented Willie Akers, Harry Kirk, Jennings Boyd, Jason Kingery and Mark Hatcher are. They immediately come to mind when a discussion of great coaches comes up.Another who always crosses my mind is former St. Albans and University of Charlest...

Fall hunting regulations published

The 2014 hunting regulation pamphlets are hot off the press and available at all local license agents. They’re also available online at wvdnr.gov.It’s none too early to pick up your camp, vehicle and home copies or to start planning for fall hunting season.Per usual the bulk of the pamphlet is related to deer hunting regulations with quite a bit less to bear, wild turkey and boar in that order. There is little new and the volume of the deer regulations can at...

But if you just can’t get by without the even somewhat warmer summer waters come flowing past your tootsies, you just have to give it a whirl. However there may be a bit of friendly competition of the wild sort for the last f...

Ron’s Ramblings

It is difficult to comprehend that high school football players will soon be in pre-season practices, with the regular season set to begin at the end of August. When I was in school, students were dismissed from classes near the end of May and did not return until after Labor Day in September. Not so any more, especially this year when make-up days were scheduled throughout the Mountain State due to the severe winter weather. But practices will begin in mid-August with the...
