CHARLESTON -- Scott did everything Coach Nick Cabell wanted except win in the opening round of the state Class AA basketball tournament Wednesday at the Charleston Civic Center.
Cabell wanted his team to slow down the tempo and keep the final score in the fifties, he said before the game against Fairmont Senior began. In the final analysis, Scott held the high-flying Polar Bears to a 55-48 final decision.
Fairmont Senior led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter and held an 20-18 halftime advantage. It was 32-27 after three. The teams played evenly, 23-23, in the final stanza.
Scott's star senior Matt Dolan led the game scoring with 18 points. Cody Brown added 14 markers; Eric May and Logan Webb tossed in seven each; and Dylyn Brown, two for the Hawks.
Travon Horton and Jarin Hilson led Fairmont Senior with 17 apiece.
The loss ended Scott's season at 15-11.
