BOONE COUNTY DEVELOPMENT BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
The quarterly Board of Directors meeting of the Boone County Community and Economic Development Corporation will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, at the Boone County Business Development Center Conference Room in Madison.
The agenda will include updates on current and proposed county projects; new county grants recently awarded; and discussion on the renewal of the Boone County Land Use Master Plan.
Board Chairman Eddie Hendricks said the public is welcome to attend the meeting.
Old Timer’s Day Reunion
The Old Timer’s Day Reunion will be held at the Morrisvale-Ryan Community Center
On Saturday, September 7, 2013, beginning at 10 a.m.
Please bring a covered dish. Drinks and tableware provided. If you have old pictures to share, please bring.
Everyone is welcome, including children. The center has space to play horseshoes, bean bag game, volleyball, etc. It’s a bring your own situation. A playground for the children is available.
Something new: The Hatfield-McCoy Trail is open on the right about one mile after getting on to Rt. 3. Bring the ATV, and “kill two birds with one stone.”

Directions for those visiting for the first time: Corridor G to the Julian Exit; cross bridge and railroad, continue on Route 3 for 3 miles; turn left on Horse Creek Road; travel 3 miles. River clean up Eagle project
We will be working on an Eagle project on Sept. 7, 2013, beginning at 8 a.m. We will be cleaning the river from West Madison Park to Lick Creek Park. All interested volunteers will meet at West Madison Park at 8 a.m. Rodger Gillenwater, Boy Scouts of America, Troop 85 in Foster, urges everyone to volunteer to help.
Stollings Family Reunion
The G.C. “Buck” and Daisy Stollings Family Reunion will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the home of Senator Ron Stollings at Haddalton. Bring a covered dish.
You’re invited to the Hospice Picnic on Sept. 7, from noon to 4 p.m. at the John Slack Park in Racine.
There will be games and fun for everyone, along with great fellowship, prizes, plenty of food and fun for everyone.
Please come and help us make this a picnic to remember.
Notice of meeting
The Boone County Public Service District will hold its regular monthly Water and Wasterwater meetings on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at the Board office. If you wish to be on the agenda please call the Board office at 304-369-2622.
The Water Board meeting will open at 6 p.m., prevailing time, followed by the Wastewater meeting at its Board office in room 101 of the Danville Community Center, Hopkins Ave., Danville, for the following purposes: 1) Water Agenda: Approval of Invoices and Line Extensions and 2) Wastewater Agenda: Approval of Invoice and District Operations.
Foster Neighborhood Crime Watch
The Foster Neighborhood Crime Watch will start back on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. The speaker will be Keith Randolph, Boone County Prosecuting Attorney.
They will also be getting ready for the Foster Yard Sale in October.
Ashford Nellis Neighborhood Watch
The Ashford Nellis Neighborhood Watch meeting is scheduled for Sept. 24, at 6 p.m., at the Nellis Church Archives. The meetings are on the last Tuesday of every month.
Madison flag football league

The Dignity Hospice 1st Annual Golf Scramble is set for Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at 1 p.m., with lunch beginning at noon, at Riverview Golf Course.
The format will be a 4-person scramble, including lunch and awards. Featured events for the day will include: Hole in One Contests, Closest to the Pin, Mulligan, Player Goodie Bags, prizes and awards.
Individual player cost is $50 and team of four is $300.

This year we are expecting a BIG TURN OUT and have rented a double sheltered pavilion on the lake again. Please bring your own picnic lunch/ food and cooler of drinks you’ll need for the entire day. You may wish to use the grill to cook out or bring carry-out.

Local student could win college money
Commander Glen Alkier of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #5578 announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary “Patriots Pen Essay Competition.
Middle school students in grades 6-8 in this area have the opportunity to compete in the VFW’s annual essay competition and win thousands of dollars.
Students begin by competing at the local Post level. Post winners advance to District. District winners compete in the state competition. The state winners compete for $46,000 in awards, and the first place winner wins $5,000. Each year, around 126,000 students participate nationwide.
Students are invited to write a 300-400-word essay on patriotic theme. The theme for 2012-2013, which is the 18th year of the contest is: “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers.”
Deadline for student entries is Nov. 1, 2013, and interested students and teachers should contact their local VFW Post #5578 by phone at 304-836-5124, 304-369-3471, 304-245-8766 or 304-369-4318.

Local student could win a trip and scholarship
Commander Glen Alkier of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #5578 announced the kick-off of the 66th year of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.
Local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C.
Students begin by competing at the local Post level with a deadline of Nov. 1, 2013. Post winners advance to District and then the first place District winner advances to the state competition. All state winner receive a four day trip to Washington, D.C. A total of $152,000 is awarded to national finalists. First place is $30,000. Annually the VFW provides more than $2.3 million in scholarships. Each year, around 50,000 students participate in the competition.
Students must wire and record a three-to-five minute essay on this theme for 2012-2013, “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” on an audio cassette tape or audio CD and present their recording, typed essay and entry form at their local VFW Post.

Housing Authority to meet
The quarterly meeting of the Boone County Housing and Redevelopment Authority will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at 6 p.m. at Black Diamond Arbors in Danville.

The Boone County Democrat Executive Committee will have a business meeting on Thursday, Sept. 5th at 5 p.m. in the annex of the Boone County Courthouse.

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program
The Boone County Community Organization through the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program has received $20 vouchers for fruits and vegetables.
To be eligible to receive coupons you must be at least 60 years of age and have a photo ID and meet income guidelines.
The income guidelines are household of one, $1,772 monthly; household of two $2,392; household of three $3,011; household of four $3,631; and household of five $4,251. All before taxes.
BCCO staff started taking applications beginning Monday through Friday at the Boone County office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Coupons must be spent by Oct. 31, 2013.
CASA volunteers needed
Western Regional CASA reaches Kanawha, Lincoln, Boone, Putnam, Cabell, and Wayne counties. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a non-profit organization that desires for every child in abuse/neglect proceedings to receive a permanent residence.
Volunteers gather information and advocate on the behalf of the children within a case. Right now, Boone County is looking for volunteers, so come help reach that many more children in our communities.
