Millers were Grand Marshals at Sherman High School’s Homecoming

Bill and Joan C. Banks-Miller were the Grand Marshals at Sherman High School’s Homecoming Ceremonies held Friday, September 20, 2013. Bill and Joan (Joanie) are both alumni of Sherman High School. Bill continued his education at Marshall University, while Joanie went on to University of Charleston and West Virginia University.

Joanie was a teacher at Sherman High School. During those years, she taught a variety of science courses and Piano. She is listed in the National Register of “Who’s Who of Business Women/Teachers-Secondary Education”. For 25 years, Joanie also played as the pianist for Sherman High School’s graduation. She also served as Cheerleader Coach, Majorette Sponsor, Science Fair Coordinator, Science Bowl Coach, and National Honor Society Advisor. In addition, Joanie was the area coordinator, choreographer, and make-up artist for the Boone County S.T.A.G.E. Productions. Joanie was also Faculty Senate Secretary at Sherman High School for 20 years.

Bill taught Physical Education and Health at Whitesville Jr. High School and Sherman Junior High. He was also the National Junior Honor Society Advisor. Bill began his coaching career at Whitesville Jr. High School in 1975 as Assistant Football and Basketball Coach. In 1975 and 1976 both teams had undefeated seasons. In 1980, he became the Head Varsity Football Coach and Head Varsity Basketball Coach in 1988. Under Coach Miller, Sherman High School was AA baseball Sectional Champions five times; AA Baseball Regional Champions three times and was WV State AA Baseball Runner Up in 1990. In 1991, he was the Head Baseball Coach for the South in the North-South Baseball game.

In the time that Bill was Head Varsity Coach, he had a career record of 23 seasons with 155 wins, 90 losses, and one undefeated season. With Coach Miller at the helm, Sherman High School went to the WV State Playoffs seven times. In June 2011, Coach Miller retired from coaching after 36 years. He is on the National Register of “Who’s Who of Coaches in American High Schools”, has been Boone County Coach of the Year 11 times, and in 2012 was named WV Retired Coach of the Year.

Both Bill and Joanie were teachers of Boone County Schools for 36 years, before retiring in June 2011. They reside in Seth, WV and Myrtle Beach, SC. In South Carolina, Bill works part-time as a Starter/Ranger at Grande Dune Members Club Golf Course, and Joanie is an Office Assistant of Admissions and Financial Aid, Scholarships/NCAA Regulations at Coastal Carolina University.

Bill and Joanie have twin daughters, Nadia and Nevada, who are students at Coastal Carolina University. Nadia is a majoring in Sociology with a Criminology track with regards to National Intelligence and Homeland Security and Nevada is majoring in Early Childhood Education emphasizing in Communications/Athletic Training.
