FROM STAFF REPORTS
October 15, 2013
An “In Remembrance Service” will be held Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the Nellis Mine Explosion Memorial adjacent to the Nellis Church/Archives, beginning at 1 p.m.
The service will honor the eleven Nellis miners who lost their lives in Boone County’s worst coal mining disaster on November 6, 1943, as well as honoring other coal miners who have lost their lives in mining accidents in Boone County.
This will mark the 70th anniversary of this tragedy.
The Boone County Historic Landmark Commission, which is organizing this service, hopes that family members who have lost loved ones in mining accidents, as well as fellow miners, citizens, and county and state officials, will attend this special service.
Friends of the Nellis Church/Archives and Nellis Elementary School students will be taking part in this event.
In the event of inclement weather the service will be held in the Nellis Elementary School Gym.
Following the ceremony refreshments will be served.
