Annual Coal Camp Reunion
The Annual Coal Camp Reunion will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Wharton Community Center.

Trick Or Treat time in Boone County
Trick Or Treat for Boone County will be on Thursday, Oct. 31st from 6 to 8 p.m.
Trunk Or Treat in Madison
Trunk Or Treat will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24th, in downtown Madison.
Brookview Elementary is hosting a gift card bingo Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. The proceeds will go towards the 5th grade trip.
Gift cards will include cards from Kroger, Cabela, Walmart, restaurants, gas cards and many others. Concessions will be available.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Stop by the school office for your ticket.
The Boone County Assn. of Retired School Employees (BCARSE) will meet Wed. Nov. 20th at 10am at the Park Ave. Rest., Danville.
The Legislative Comm. will present the program which will consist of a panel made up of our State legislators from this area.
Bob Peal, our senior VFW member, will present the devotional. Door prizes will be given to those holding the lucky numbers plus special coins to be given away. 50/50 will be available to those who choose to play.
Our State Pres., John Riddle, will be present. Jenny Light, pres., encourages all members to attend this informative meeting.

Secret Santa Program
The Boone County Community Organization (BCCO) is currently taking applications for the Secret Santa Program.
In order to apply you must come to the BCCO office, located at 347 Kenmore Drive, Lick Creek Road, in Danville, behind the Health Department.
You are eligible to receive Secret Santa if you receive any amount of food stamps and your children are 12 and under. Please be sure to bring your food stamp card and Social Security numbers for yourself and your children.

Local student could win college money
Commander Glen Alkier of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #5578 announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary “Patriots Pen Essay Competition.
Middle school students in grades 6-8 in this area have the opportunity to compete in the VFW’s annual essay competition and win thousands of dollars.
Students begin by competing at the local Post level. Post winners advance to District. District winners compete in the state competition. The state winners compete for $46,000 in awards, and the first place winner wins $5,000. Each year, around 126,000 students participate nationwide.
Students are invited to write a 300-400-word essay on patriotic theme. The theme for 2012-2013, which is the 18th year of the contest is: “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers.”

Local student could win a trip and scholarship
Commander Glen Alkier of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #5578 announced the kick-off of the 66th year of the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.
Local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C.
Students begin by competing at the local Post level with a deadline of Nov. 1, 2013. Post winners advance to District and then the first place District winner advances to the state competition. All state winner receive a four day trip to Washington, D.C. A total of $152,000 is awarded to national finalists. First place is $30,000. Annually the VFW provides more than $2.3 million in scholarships. Each year, around 50,000 students participate in the competition.
Students must wire and record a three-to-five minute essay on this theme for 2012-2013, “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” on an audio cassette tape or audio CD and present their recording, typed essay and entry form at their local VFW Post.
