OCEANA — The Van Middle School football team picked up their 6th win of the year by surviving a hard-hitting defensive struggle with the Oceana Indians, winning the contest 7-6 the past Thursday evening.

Oceana’s defensive unit contained Van’s running game much of the night, only giving up 166 yards to the Bulldog running back duo of Brady Grant and Drew Price. The two had been averaging more than 300 yards rushing between them on the season.

Van Head Coach Ronald Deal said, ” Oceana is a very tough, hard-nosed football team. We have nothing but respect for their players and coaching staff.”

Van was led by quarterback Taylor Jarrell, who completed three of six passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. Jarrell picked up 43 yards on two carries as well. Gavin Smith had two receptions for 60 yards and Grant caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Jarrell. Grant had 92 yards rushing, 14 tackles and one interception. Price picked up 74 yards and 15 tackles to lead the Bulldog defense.

Van will travel to Poca this Thursday evening for its final game of the regular season.
