The Sherman High School boys basketball team was scheduled to play at Tug Valley yesterday (Tuesday, March 4) after defeating Montcalm, 81-63, in the opening round of the Region III, Section 1 Class A tournament Saturday.

The Tide rolled to victory after an opening quarter that saw the teams tentative on offense and ending in a 10-10 tie. Sherman took control in the second period, however, outscoring Montcalm, 26-13, for a 36-23 lead. The Tide continued in the third frame, with 22 points to 17 for the visitors. The final canto was another tie at 23-23 for the victory margin.

The win meant Sherman moved on to the second round of tournament play and a meeting yesterday at Tug Valley. Man defeated Van, 70-50, in the other opening round game. The Hillbillies were to meet Greater Beckley Christian last evening. Tuesday’s winners will meet in the sectional finals.

Blake Brewer led the game scoring, with 26 points for Sherman. Corey Smith added 15; Cody Muncy, 14; Braden Harrah, nine; Jacob Stewart, eight; John Pauley, seven; and Caleb Duncan, two for the Tide.

The sectional championship game is set for 7 p.m., Friday, at the home of the higher seeded team.
