If the Skyhawks are to make it to the Class AA state playoffs again, they can’t take any team lightly.
The Skyhawks have dominated Wyoming East under Shane Griffith, who is in his 10th season at his alma mater as head coach.
Last year was the first year that the Class AA Scott Skyhawk’s football team didn’t make the state playoffs in quite some time, according to head coach Shane Griffith.
I guess the question this year for many Skyhawk fans is, “Can the team make it back to the playoffs this year?”
“This off-season that has been our goal,” Griffith said. “To get our expectations back and play the solid football we are used to.”
Griffith said there are some returning players that should give Scott a solid team on both sides of the ball.
“Senior quarterback Nevin Honeycutt is going into his third year as a starter,” the coach said. “Obviously we are expecting some big play capabilities out of him.”
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Honeycutt has played on the varsity team since his freshman season.
Jacob Doss is a returning starter at the middle linebacker position.
“He has two or three years of being a starting player under his belt,” Griffith said.
Griffith says that the team has some experience, but also has some young faces coming in.
“A lot of times with youth, they may be inexperienced but they bring excitement to the team,” he said.
Griffith says the team’s 2010 schedule is a tough one.
“Our schedule is always brutal,” he said. “We went back into the Cardinal Conference this year and picked up some of those teams on our schedule, like Sissionville and Point Pleasant.”
Scott also will face Wayne, Logan and county rival Sherman as well.
The team is open the first weekend and opens its season on Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Wyoming East.
“Week in and week out we will be playing some of the best Class AA teams in the state,” Griffith said.
According to their coach, the Skyhawks have the attitude, talent, experience and youth to make it back to the state playoffs, which is something Skyhawk fans have gotten used of the past several seasons.
“We definitely want to compete for a playoff birth and see where we go from there,” Griffith said.
