An alleged conspiracy between a couple of students to take guns to Claiborne High School (CHS) Thursday morning was stopped by school and law enforcement officials before the school day began.
According to Connie Holdway, director of Claiborne County Schools, there were rumors that there were going to be possible student shooters at CHS on Thursday.
“We take rumors like that seriously, so school administration and local police responded to it,” she said.
The students involved never set foot on school property Thursday morning, she added, because the alleged threat was acted upon before they arrived on the property.
“We want the community to know that the safety of our students, staff and faculty are of the utmost concern, and by working proactively and collaboratively with law enforcement agencies the administration continues to provide for the safety of our students and the security of our schools,” Holdway said.
According to Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray, there was some conversations overheard that were “out of character” that alarmed some and once the rumors reached school administration they were acted upon.
“We treated it as if there were an actual threat,” Ray said.
The students allegedly involved were located and taken to the Claiborne County Justice Center, where Ray said lengthy interviews were held.
“They admitted the conversation took place,” Ray said, “but through the investigation it was determined there was no true threat. We had to make sure there was no actual threat, though, and we’re glad it wasn’t.”
School officials, the students and their parents all cooperated with the investigation, Ray said.
“The investigation was made much easier because of everyone’s cooperation,” he added.
The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department concluded that there will be no criminal charges filed in the matter.
“The school system will determine if any further action needs to be taken,” Ray said.
The Claiborne Progress will have updates as they become available.
