A young Tazewell woman died Monday morning as the result of injuries sustained in a wreck Sunday afternoon.

According to a report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), Chasity M. Louthen, 20, was a passenger in a 2006 Acura RSX driven by Erik J. Stone, 23, of New Tazewell.

The report states that Stone was driving east on Cave Springs Road near the intersection with Ferguson Road when he lost control while trying to negotiate a curve. The vehicle hit an embankment, landing on the driver’s side. It then sideswiped a utility pole, taking the roof of the vehicle off.

Stone was transported to Claiborne County Hospital by the Claiborne County EMS. Louthen was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

The wreck occurred around 2:28 p.m. Sunday and the THP report states that Louthen died at 7 a.m. Monday.

Neither person was wearing a seat belt, the report states, but they probably would not have made a difference according to the investigating trooper.

Citations were issued and criminal charges are pending the completion of the investigation, according to the report.

Trooper Bobby Brooks is the investigating officer.

In addition to the THP and Claiborne County EMS, the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department and North Tazewell Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
