A crash near the Danville/Madison exit of U.S. 119 in the southbound lanes this evening resulted in a massive traffic jam and the driver of a tractor-trailer being flown by helicopter to the hospital.

The truck went off the road, through the guardrail and overturned down the hill, according to emergency responders at the scene of the accident.

Traffic was shuttled back and forth from the south to northbound lanes while the southbound lanes were totally shut down for hours to clean up the accident. Both lanes were shut down for a long period of time while the truck was being pulled out and removed from the scene.

The wreck happened Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 29, 2013, around 4 p.m. on a stretch of road between the Donald R. Kuhn Juvenile Center and the Stevens Auto Center, 911 said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, which was carrying gravel, had to be cut out of the vehicle and was flown to the hospital for treatment, emergency dispatchers added.

The accident remains under investigation and the name of the driver was not released. The condition of the driver was also not released.
