MADISON — A Connecticut woman arrested after police said she embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from her 96-year old aunt who lives in Boone County was in Boone County Circuit Court on Wed., Oct. 30, 2013, to face the charge.

Margaret Sue Beam, 76, is charged with embezzlement by misuse of power of attorney, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case.

West Virginia State Police said Beam obtained power of attorney documents on her elderly aunt in 2010, the complaint said. Once that document was on file, troopers said she was able to get into her aunt’s safety deposit box and cashed U.S. savings bonds. She is also accused of withdrawing money out of her aunt’s checking account. State Police said from 2010 until May 2013, Beam embezzled more than $800,000 from her aunt.

Beam was indicted by a Boone County grand jury on that charge in September.

She has been being held in the Southwestern Regional Jail.

The criminal complaint said Beam confessed to the allegations.

During the hearing, prosecutors offered Beam a plea agreement, but she and her defense attorney wanted time to review the offer. Details of the plea offer were not released.

Boone County Circuit Judge William Thompson set a plea or set trial date hearing for Wed., Nov. 13, 2013.
