VAN — A single vehicle crash early Friday morning around 1 a.m., Nov. 29th, has claimed the life of a McDowell County man, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.
Dennis McKinney, 45 years old, was killed when the vehicle he was operating was involved in the crash.
Nathan Lester, 28, also from McDowell County was seriously injured and has been transported to CAMC General in Charleston.
The accident happened in Bigson on WV Rt 85 near Van in Boone County.
“According to witnesses and officers on scene, alcohol and speed both appear to be factors in the crash,” said Boone County Chief Deputy Chad Barker in a news release. “The vehicle lost control and rolled over into a small stream and caught fire. It is believed the driver was killed during the accident and before the fire occurred.”
No further word at this time on the condition of the passenger, Barker added.
• In other local news, WSAZ.com reported last week, that a home was been destroyed after flames ripped through it Friday evening, Nov. 29th.
Racine firefighters told WSAZ.com, the fire broke out on Coal River Road in the Bloomingrose section of Boone County.
“It was just popping and cracking and big blazes and black smoke,” neighbor Linda Hapney said Saturday.
Hapney was alerted to the fire by the sirens of the fire trucks.
“It was huge. It scared me to death,” Hapney said.” I thought it might get into my house even.”
Hapney lives just beside the site of the fire.
“I didn’t know if anyone was in there and that’s what really unnerved me, I thought she might be in there,” Hapney said.
Firefighters say the woman who lives at the home was not home. Officials are investigating the cause and say they have not determined if it was accidental.
The fire departments from Racine and Whitesville responded to the call.
