MADISON – A Boone County man was convicted by a jury Thursday, March 20, 2014, following a three day trial.

Randy Dale Jarrell, 50, of Danville, was found guilty of selling 5 hydrocodone to a police cooperating individual for $40.00 cash.

In September 2012, Trooper First Class J. R. Brewer of the U.S. 119 Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force began an investigation into the selling of prescription pills by Jarrell.

TFC Brewer was able to obtain the assistance of a cooperating individual who traveled to Jarrell’s residence and made the purchase.

Jarrell was indicted by a Boone County Grand Jury in September 2013 on one count of Delivery of a Controlled Substance.

During the trial, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Justin Marlowe presented evidence to the jury that included a video recording of the drug purchase.

The jury deliberated an hour and 45 minutes before returning a verdict of guilty in the case.

Hydrocodone, the type of pills sold by Jarrell, is one of the most abused opioid pain relievers on the market.

The Centers for Disease Control statistics show West Virginia’s drug overdose death rate for 2010 at more than twice the national average. Per capita, Boone County has one of the highest rates of drug overdose deaths in the state, according to those statistics.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Marlowe thanked the jury for its service to Boone County. “Over the last four years the prosecutor’s office and law enforcement have placed an increased emphasis on drug cases,” Marlowe said. “Our prosecutions have more than doubled. We are pleased that the jury agreed with the evidence we presented in the case.”

Following the verdict, Jarrell, who had been free on bond, was remanded to the custody of Southwestern Regional Jail pending a sentencing hearing on April 16, 2014.

Jarrell faces up to 5 years in prison when he is sentenced.
