Debbie Griffith, mother of Scott High School head football coach Shane Griffith, started at Jeffrey Spencer grade school in 1987. This past school year was her last as a teacher as she is retiring.

“She really loved that school and community and it was with a heavy heart that she made the decision to move to Madison Grade School,” said her son Shane Griffith. “I believe she came to Madison Grade in 1990 or 91. She had been a parent of Madison Grade and it was about three miles from home so the move made sense.”

Madison Grade quickly became her home and she was named Boone County Teacher of the Year in 1993.

“Mom went in early and stayed late every day and dedicated herself to the belief that every child had something to offer,” Shane Griffith said. “She helped so many students over the years gain confidence, overcome challenges and find their place. Mom never really knew what summer vacation was because she was at the school almost every day during the summer months giving her time, effort and devotion to the profession she dedicated herself to. I believe what made her so special to the students and parents over the years was the fact that she was so genuine in her approach.”

The Coal Valley News wants to thank and congratulate Debbie Griffith on her extraordinary teaching career and her devotion to children and her community.
