MADISON — Excitement is in the air as plans are underway for the 2013 high school football season. Local fans can get a jump-start on the year by attending the 2013 Boone County Grid Classic, scheduled for Friday, August 23, at the Scott High Field in Madison.

According to an announcement, gates will open at 5 p.m. for the event that features Scott, Sherman and Van highs in action. Opening ceremonies, including band performances, begin at 6 p.m. There will be a special coal miner tribute during the opening ceremonies.

All Boone County high schools, middle schools, junior highs and midget football teams, bands, cheering squads, majorette squads and guests have been invited to participate in the opening ceremonies.

Midget players will participate in a punt/pass/kick competition, with the finals being held after the first and second scrimmages.

In the opening scrimmage, it will be Scott versus Sherman. Games will be played in two 15-minute quarters with a continuously running clock, except for official stoppages. Kick-off time for the first scrimmage is approximately 7 p.m. Next, at about 8:30 p.m., Sherman and Van will meet. Then, the nightcap, set to start around 10 p.m., will feature Scott and Van.

Gate receipts will be split evenly between the three schools in what is usually the largest fundraiser of the year for the teams. Each school’s band will perform separately and then join in a combined performance for the enjoyment of attendees.

Admission for the scrimmages is $7, with all players, cheerleaders and majorettes in uniform admitted free.
