The Scott Skyhawk boys basketball team lifted their season record to 12-5 in a snow-shortened schedule last week. Inclement weather forced cancellation of Lincoln County schools on Friday, postponed the Skyhawk meeting with Lincoln County High. The game has been re-scheduled for February 26 at Hamlin.
Earlier in the week, Scott edged fellow Cardinal Conference member Herbert Hoover, 65-53, before defeating county rival Sherman Wednesday evening at Seth, 89-63.
Hoover actually jumped out to a 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter at Falling Rock before Scott bounced back to take a 35-27 halftime advantage. The Skyhawks led, 55-40 after three periods. The final frame went to Hoover, 13-10, to account for the final Scott victory margin.
Scott’s Anthony Sigmon led the scoring parade for the Skyhawks, with 21 points. Logan Webb added 16; Dylan DeHart, seven; Cody Brown and Alex Ables, six each; Eric May, five; and Kirk Price, four.
In addition to being Cardinal rivals, Scott and Hoover are in the same region for the basketball tournaments in March. The Class AA sectional is set for March 3-8, with the regional from March 11 to 15. The state boys tournament at the Charleston Civic Center is planned for March 19 to 22.
Teams in Region IV, Section 1 include Clay County, Hoover, Nicholas County, Poca and Sissonville. In Section 2, the teams are Chapmanville Regional High School, Mingo Central, Scott, Tolsia and Wayne.
Most observers list Scott, CRHS and Mingo Central as probable winners of the sectional. The champion of each section meets the runner-up of the other section to determine which two teams will move on to Charleston for the state tourney. Poca is the heavy favorite to win Section 1.
In the game at Seth, Scott jumped out to an early commanding lead and never looked back.
The Skyhawks led, 23-12, after the opening frame and held a 39-34 lead at halftime. The second half was all-Scott, 50-29, to reach the final margin.
The loss dropped Sherman, of Class A, to 5-9 on the year.
Leading the game scoring parade was Sherman’s Corey Smith, who scored 28 points. Blake Brewer added 14; Cody Muncy and Braden Harrah, nine apiece; Adam Pauley, five; Tyler Stewart and Tait Pauley, two each; and Aaron Lowe, one for the Tide.
Scott’s leading scorer was May, with 23. Brown and Ables added 16 each; Webb, 13; DeHart, 11; Price, four; Patrick Underwood, three; Brandon LaFauci, two; and Andrew Day, one for the Hawks.
Scott was scheduled to be at home against powerful Bluefield on Monday, February 17. A trip to Wayne was scheduled for Tuesday. Brad Napier’s Mingo Central will be in Madison Friday, February 21; with a trip to Nicholas County scheduled for Tuesday, February 25. The regular season finale is set for Hamlin on February 26.
