SHERMAN - The Sherman Lady Tide are certainly making the Region 4 Section 2 tournament interesting.

After losing both regular season meetings to Winfield, the Lady Tide pulled off the upset last Wednesday evening, a 7-6 decision over the Lady Generals in sectional play at Seth.

The Maroon and Gold moved on to play the number one seed Generals after a 3-0 defeat of Poca, earlier Wednesday.

After rain canceled tournament play, it resumed on Friday and Winfield knocked Poca out to face the Lady Tide once again.

This time, the Generals picked up the win 2-1.

Game five was scheduled for Monday, May 7 with the winner moving on to regional play. The loser packs up and heads home.

Junior pitching ace India Stone fired a two hitter and fanned 11 to pick up her ninth win of the season.

The Lady Tide plated two runs in the third and one in the fourth on six hits. They also committed no errors.

Senior second baseman Brittany Trail finished 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored; Stone, freshman Madison Bowman, and sophomores Mandi Workman, and Brittany Merritt also added base hits for Sherman.

Workman and Merritt scored a run each and Merritt added an RBI.

With the win, the Lady Tide moved on to face the Lady Generals in game two of the sectional tournament.

Sherman 7 Winfield 6

The Lady Tide moved into the driver’s seat of the tournament with a 7-6 win over Winfield.

Sherman got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Stone led off with a double. She later scored for a 1-0 Tide lead.

The Boone County ladies added another run in the second, before Winfield answered with two in the third.

In the fourth, the Lady Generals plated two more for a 4-2 lead after four innings complete.

But the Lady Tide was done.

In the fifth, they added five runs to take a 7-4 lead.

Merritt, Stone, senior leftfielder Tanya Holmes, Bowman, and senior first baseman Brittany Summers all had hits in the inning. Senior catcher Angela Santonia also walked. By the time the dust cleared, it was a 7-4 advantage for Sherman.

But Winfield was finished either. They made things interesting, adding two more to their total in the fifth for a 7-6 Maroon and Gold lead.

Neither team could get anything else going in the sixth nor seventh; 7-6 was the final margin of victory.

Stone led the Lady Tide offensively going 3-4. She had a double and scored two runs.

Bowman was 2-4 with an RBI; Holmes had a hit, a run scored, and an RBI; Workman finished with a double and she scored a run, and Summers, Merritt, and senior designated player Sam Williams all added hits in the win.

Merritt scored a run as did freshmen Jessica Hudson and Crystal Halstead.

The win put the Lady Tide in the driver’s seat of Region 4 Section 2. They would have to be beaten twice in order to lose the tournament.

Sherman 1 Winfield 2

After rain washed out Thursday’s games, the tournament picked back up on Thursday, May 3.

Winfield put Poca out of the sectional tournament in the 5:00 p.m. game with a 3-0 win; they then moved on to face the Lady Tide at 7:00 p.m.

The outcome of the 7:00 p.m. game was a 2-1 Lady General win.

The Green and Black scored one in the first and one in the fourth. Both runs were unearned.

Sherman’s run came in the fourth inning. Holmes led off the inning being hit by a pitch. Santonia moved her to second, and a hit by Bowman sent her to third. Workman’s sacrifice fly then scored Holmes for the Tide’s only run.

For Sherman offensively, Stone doubled, and Bowman and Williams added hits. Workman had an RBI.

The loss sent the tournament to a “winner takes all” rematch between the two on Monday, May 7.

Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. with the winner moving on to regional play and the loser going home.
