HAMLIN – In last Friday’s game against Lincoln Co., Scott Skyhawks’ Robert Bias was named the WZAC Player of the Week. He carried the ball 11 times for 165 yards and two (2) TD’s.
Lincoln County was hoping to erase the bitter taste left in their mouths after a lack-luster performance against Huntington High in the season opener. The Panthers played host to Class AA Scott High School Friday night at Hamlin Lions Club Field. Critical turnovers and untimely mistakes cost Lincoln County dearly as the Skyhawks took advantage of the gifts and soared back to Boone County with a resounding 53-20 victory.
Robert Bias and Tristan Crone each scored two touchdowns for Scott, which remained unbeaten at 2-0.
Both teams were plauged with by penalties and turnovers during the first quarter. Lincoln County coughed up the ball at midfield and the Skyhawks wasted little time converting it into points. Crone capped off the drive with a 3-yard tuchdown run with 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter giving Scott an early 7-0 lead.
It would be the second quarter that eventually put the game out of reach for Lincoln County as the Skyhawks erupted for 27 unanswered points in the second quarter. A fumble, two interceptions, and a blocked punt attempt gave Scott plenty of opportunities to race out to a commanding 34-0 halftime lead.
Scott’s Michael Belcher scored on a 57-yard touchdown run the first play after a Panther fumble at the 47-yard line with 7:30 left in the second quarter.
Scott intercepted Lincoln County’s Grant Bates at the 38-yard line and capped off the ensuing drive with a Cameron Loftis 1-yard touchdown run with 5:03 left in the first half.
Three minutes later, Scott scored again as Hunter Bradley crossed the goal line from 18 yards out, giving the Skyhawks a 28-0 lead with 2:17 left until halftime.
Lincoln County was forced to go three-and-out giving Scott great field position before halftime. Bias capped off the three-play drive cruising in for a 38-yard touchdown with 41 seconds left until halftime.
Scott’s openeing drive in the second half resulted in another score as Bias ran in for a 15-yard touchdown and Crone scored on their next possession following another Panther turnover. Crone scored his second touchdown of the night on a 3-yard run, increasing the lead to 47-0 with 5:36 left to play in the third quarter.
Lincoln County finally answered on their ensuing possession. Bates went 4-for-5 passing on the drive, his last pass to Blake Taylor for a 16-yard touchdown. Taylor made a spectacular catch by out-jumping a Scott defender in the back of the end zone. With 29 seconds remaing in the third quarter, the Panthers finally got on the scoreboard, trailing 47-6.
Lincoln County could not take advantage of an interception by Blake Cooper at the 46-yard line with 9:31 left in the game and fumbled the ball away two plays later.
Lincoln County held Scott on downs and took possession around midfield. A bad snap resulted in Scott’s Billy Kilmer scooping up the ball and rumbling 50 yards for a touchdown. Scott increased their lead to 53-6 with 9:01 left in the game.
The Panthers held the Skyhawks on downs again and began another scoring drive. With 5:49 left in the game, runningback Brian Parsons broke free on a 47-yard touchdown run. Bates found Taylor for the two-point ocnversion as Lincoln County began showing signs of life but still trailed 53-14.
Parsons scored his second touchdown of the night on a beautiful 79-yard touchdown pass from Bates. Bates fired a short pass to Parsons who weaved his way throught the Skyhawk defense to the end zone, making the final score 53-20.
Parsons finished with 229 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. Bates went 8-for-26 passing for 179 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions. Receiver Blayke Cyfers hauled in five passes for 55 yards while Taylor caught two passes for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Scott will host Chapmanville Friday night. Friday night’s game with Chapmanville is a “Black Out” game and that all Scott fans are asked to wear black clothing to the game.
