We are about to enter the month of May and many are ready for gardening and getting their flowers planted.

Sympathy to the family of Sue Ann Webb Wilhoit, of Sevierville, Tenn., who recently passed away. Sue Ann was a sister-in-law of David and Helen Wilhoit, of Peytona.

Condolences to the family of Norman Dean “Dino” Lafferty, of Peytona, who passed away April 19 at the age of 43.

Jason, Elizabeth and Mahaylie Clay, of Costa, want to announce the birth of their beautiful daughter and younger sister. Maleigha Nicole Clay was born March 2. Congratulations to the Clay family.

Congratulations to Justin D. Lutsy and Samantha Parsons, who were married April 18 at the Rumble Community Baptist Church.

The Nellis Elementary Alumni and Friends Association reception and reunion is scheduled for May 2 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the school. Membership dues are $5 per year. All former students are welcome to attend.

The Nellis Elementary School gym has been reserved for June 27 for the 27th annual Nellis-Armco Reunion, which will be combined with the third annual Nellis Grade School Reunion. Mark you calendar for this event.

With the summer season coming up, this is a good recipe for a cold drink on a hot day. Thanks to Sue Barker for sharing.

Blueberry Lemonade

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 cups water

1 pint fresh blueberries

1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 10 big lemons, including pulp but not seeds)

First, make a simple syrup by combining one cup of sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the mixture boils. Lower the heat and allow the syrup to simmer for another minute. Remove from heat and let cool.

In a blender or food processor, puree the blueberries with two tablespoons of sugar. In a pitcher, combine the cooled syrup, lemon juice and blueberry puree. To serve, pour one-fourth to one-third cup of base into a glass and fill with water. Makes base for 12 servings.

Elouise Hutchison, of Elkview, recently had the flu but now is doing much better. The phone lines were hot from Florida with “Mr T” calling every day to check on her.

Belated happy birthday to Irene West Whiting, of Jackson, Ohio, and Evelene West Hager, of Mebane, N.C., who celebrated their 69th birthday April 6. The West twins lived at Nellis during the 1950s. Irene tells me they, along with their brother, Arthur West, plan to attend the Nellis-Armco/Nellis Grade School Reunion on June 27 at the Nellis Elementary School gym.

Happy first birthday to Lila Jane Mikolas, daughter of Dan and Dawn Mikolas, of Graytown, Ohio, on May 2. Lila has an older brother, Jack. Maggie Gunnoe, of Toledo, Ohio, is Lila’s great-grandmother.

Happy birthday on May 5 to a special niece, sister and best friend, Wilma Whittaker Smith, of Albany, Ga., from Bob and Ebby, who love you and wish you many more.

Happy birthday to Chris Evans, of Costa, who will be 46 on April 29, from all of your family and friends.
