VAN - A school district funding dispute has parents in Boone County mad and speaking out, mostly with harsh comments on their online Facebook pages. According to school officials, Van Junior-Senior High has canceled away baseball games because their funding is not as much as other nearby schools. While other high schools and junior high or middle schools are given $10,000, Van Junior-Senior is given only $10,000 as well. Boone County School Superintendent John Hudson says in the county’s excess levy in May 2010 the Boone County Board of Education saw the need to put money in for transportation for schools in the county. “It was $10,000 for each secondary school and $2,500 for each elementary school in addition to what we get from the state and county funds,” he said. “The whole purpose of this was to help parents and the schools with transportation for non-revenue generating sports and non-academic activities that don’t generate much money.” Hudson said in most cases, football is the only revenue generating sport. “One example says with be with a girls’ softball team or boys’ baseball team,” Hudson explained. “many times the moms and dads drove them to the games. This money is supposed to try to help get transportation.” Hudson confirmed the issue and receiving some complaints, because Scott High School in Madison and Madison Middle School get $10,000 each. They are separate schools. However, since Van Jr./Sr. High is combined, it is only one school and it only received $10,000. “I guess they feel Van Jr./Sr High School should get double money,” he said. “I understand them indicating that, but Scott High School for example has many more students and several other teams, such as track, tennis, soccer. They have more kids to transport for football and band. Scott, for example, has lots more non-revenue generating teams and activities.” Hudson said to keep in mind the money is additional funding the schools never had before 2010. “We are just trying to avoid parents having to drive kids to games,” he said. However, some Van parents have claimed away games had to be cancelled due to lack of transportation funding. Hudson says the school’s principal and assistant principal are in charge of the funding. Some parents have indicated that they may attend future school board meetings to protest the way the funding is handed out.
