FOSTER – Barring any additional snow days, the current Boone County School calendar now lists Friday, June 7, 2013, as the last day of school. This announcement was made during the Boone County Board of Education’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at its operations complex in Foster. “Staff will come back on June 10th and 11th,” said Boone County Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lisa Beck. The board and those attending the meeting were also given a revised Boone County Schools Drug-Free Workplace Policy for review and discussion. Following the review and discussion period, Boone County Schools Superintendent John Hudson recommended that the board approve the policy, which they did by unanimous vote. “After a lengthy process, this policy addressed some very serious issues,” Boone County Schools Assistant Superintendent Jeff Huffman told the board members. Boone County Board of Education President Mark Sumpter thanked the community and committee members involved with the process and called the policy “a very good thing.” “This policy not only addresses the punishment side, but also the side available to helping those with addiction issues,” Sumpter said. The policy and the school calendar can both be found on Boone County Schools’ Web site at www.boonecountyboe.org The school system also announced preschool and kindergarten registration for the 2013-2014 school year. The pre-enrollment of preschool and kindergarten children for the 2013-2014 school year has been scheduled. Parents of children who will turn five years old before September 1, 2013 must bring their child’s information to their local school for kindergarten pre-enrollment. Preschool children must be four years of age before September 1, 2013. All students enrolling in either preschool or kindergarten should present the following in order to enroll: a legal birth certificate (from Vital Statistics) with the raised seal; a copy of the child’s social security card; and a complete legal immunization record listing required immunizations and boosters. If a child’s birthday is during the summer and the boosters cannot be administered until the summer, booster dates should be submitted to the school prior to the opening day of school after your child visits the doctor. Also, if your child is enrolling for the first time, you must provide a health check physical examination form (or the child’s physician’s physical examination form that includes the same exam and screening information as the Health Check form) completed and signed by the child’s health care provider within the past year. Your child’s doctor can obtain the correct form on the internet. If you do not have a health care provider and need assistance in obtaining the physical, contact Sue Peros, Director of School Nurses. Your completed physical will be due to your child’s school by May 1, 2013. If you are unable to attend on the scheduled pre-enrollment day, please contact your child’s school as soon as possible after February 18, 2013. Completion of preschool pre-enrollment does not guarantee that a student has been accepted into a preschool classroom. Preschool sites are determined by sufficient numbers of students enrolling and students are assigned to a preschool classroom on a first come, first served basis, until the maximum number for enrollment is met. Students born on or between September 1, 2008 and October 31, 2008 can be admitted to kindergarten based upon the successful passage of the kindergarten readiness test. If you are interested in having your child take this test, contact the school that your child is scheduled to attend. If you have any questions please call Mary Knapp or Dolly Chambers at 304-369-8267 or contact your child’s school.
