ASHFORD -- Students, parents, elected officials, community partners, school officials and educators gathered at Ashford Rumble Elementary School last week to participate in a dedication ceremony for the school’s new computer lab. “I am thankful that we no longer have to walk outside through bad weather to get to our lab. The new lab is extravigent! The computers work a lot faster and they're high tech and easier to use,” said 6th grade student Haylee Clendenin, during the ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012. Amy Pritt, the school’s principal, gave the opening remarks and said the lab was much needed. “It’s improved our use of technology with our students in a much safer environment,” Pritt said. “The kids, parents and teachers all love it.” Now, students get hands-on learning in a sparkling new room filled with computers, data ports, power outlets, new flooring, large whiteboards and plenty of classroom space as well. “The transition from our old lab to our new one is amazing,” Pritt added. The ceremony was marked by speeches from students, the presentation of certificates of appreciation to Boone County Schools officials and the Boone County Board of Education, as well as Christmas songs performed by the school’s bell choir. Boone County Schools new director of technology Thomas Hanson also attended the ceremony. “This project had a great design and is expandable,” he said. “It meets the current needs for the students and offers the latest and greatest technologies, which is a great investment in the students’ and the school’s future.” “This is just one much-needed project for schools in our county,” said Boone County Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lisa Beck. The Boone County Board of Education continues to work on improvement projects by updating technologies and meeting schools needs, even though a large school bond failed in August 2011. “The Boone County Board of Education is committed to do as many projects as possible,” said Boone County School Superintendent John Hudson. Funding for the new lab came from Boone County funds through the current school levy. “We will be announcing another project that is jointly funded by the West Virginia School Building Authority and the Boone County Board of Education in mid-January of next year,” Hudson said. “We continue to examine our 10 year Comprehensive Educational Facilities Plan to improve the educational needs of our students, teachers, parents and communities.”
