Boone deputies witness motorist throw puppy from moving truck
by ASHLEY B. CRAIG, Charleston Daily Mail
(MCT)Authorities need help identifying the people who were seen throwing a puppy from a moving vehicle in Boone County. Deputies K.D. McCarty and A.D. Keadle were heading north on W.Va. 94 near Lens Creek just after 3 p.m. Sunday when they saw a person in a pickup truck two vehicles ahead throw something out the passenger side window, Sheriff Rodney Miller said. The truck then sped off toward Marmet. McCarty and Keadle pulled up to see what the object was and found it to be a 7- to 10-week-old black puppy. The dog, believed to be a pit bull or boxer mix, was bleeding from her nose and mouth and trying to stand on the asphalt. "It could have been hit by a car," Miller said. "Of course the truck got away because (the deputies) were trying to do something with the dog." The deputies immediately called for help and were told to take the dog to the Animal Emergency Clinic in South Charleston. Miller said Wednesday the dog was doing well and would be put up for adoption. Deputies still are searching for the people who threw the dog from the window. Officers described the truck as a single cab Dodge or Ford pickup. The truck had a "distinctive yellow paint job" that would be easily recognizable. There also was a load of junk in the truck bed, Miller said. Nearby residents told deputies the truck had been through before abandoning animals along the road. "I don't know what possesses you to have the gumption to throw a puppy out of a moving vehicle," Miller said. "But if we can get a hold of them we're going to prosecute them." The puppy remains at the emergency clinic. Angela Santonie, a technician at the clinic, said the dog was eating and drinking well and behaving normally after the incident. "It doesn't seem to have fazed her much," Santonie said. "She's a sweet little puppy. She loves people and seems to like other dogs, too." Santonie said the puppy is available for adoption and those interested can contact the clinic after 7 p.m. for more information at 304-768-2911. The clinic is only open at night. Anyone with information on the truck or its occupants can contact the Boone Sheriff's Office at 304-369-7346. Contact writer Ashley B.
