WHITESVILLE -- Pray Construction is putting the finishing touches on the UBB Miners Memorial plaza this week in preparation for the delivery of plants and trees from Valley Gardens in Charleston.
Means Stone and Blue Creek Masonry completed installation of the stone veneer and limestone coping on the memorial's walls last week. Work on the parking area and grading the site is expected to wrap up in the next few days.
Rock of Ages has begun etching text and images on to the finished segments of granite that will make up the UBB Miners Memorial monument and entrance sign at its production facility located in Vermont. The First Responders Tribute, a bronze relief sculpted by WV artist Ross Straight, is being prepared for casting in the coming days. Signage that will explain the UBB story from Interpretive Graphics in Utah are nearing completion as well.
Once the final pieces of the memorial are completed and delivered in the coming weeks a ceremony will be held at the site to dedicate the memorial. The specific date of the dedication is still to be determined but late July is the target time frame. Invitations to family members and guests are expected to start going out next month. If you would have any questions regarding the dedication and invitations please email the Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group at ubbminersmemorial@gmail.com.
