DANVILLE – Boone County Fair officials have announced that American Idol and country music stars Bucky Covington and Chase Likens will be two of the featured concerts at this year’s Boone County Fair.
William Joel “Bucky” Covington III is a country music singer. He placed eighth on the 5th season of the Fox Network’s talent competition series American Idol. In December 2006, he signed a recording contract with Lyric Street Records.
His self-titled debut album, produced by Mark Miller of the band Sawyer Brown, was released on April 17, 2007. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, and produced three hit singles on the Hot Country Songs charts: “A Different World” at number six, “It’s Good to Be Us” at number eleven, and “I’ll Walk” at number ten. Three more singles: “I Want My Life Back,” “Gotta Be Somebody” and “A Father’s Love (The Only Way He Knew How),” were released for an unreleased second album, titled I’m Alright.
Covington is scheduled to perform Friday night, Aug. 3, at 9 p.m. after opening act Ray Wheatley & Branded X Band open the show at 7:30 p.m., fair officials announced.
Country singer Chase Likens hails from Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The Southern boy started singing at 5 years old at an elementary school talent show.
Back in Season 10 of American Idol, Chase also went through to Hollywood Week, where he got cut.
A student at Marshall University who’s majoring in music education, Chase’s favorite American Idol is Taylor Hicks, whom he called an underdog. Though we haven’t heard much from Chase in Season 11, he’s obviously impressed the judges enough to make it to the Top 24. In the semifinals, the country guy earned high marks from the judges for his take on “Storm Warning.”
Likens will appear at the fair on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 9 p.m., officials said.
Fair official Virginia Messer says there will be a gate price at 8 p.m. each night to help cover the music prices this year.
The fair will also include a carnival daily and fireworks, she said.
Messer said fair events will start July 29 with the car and bike show scheduled at the Lick Creek Fairgrounds in Danville.
“Registration is noon to 2 p.m.,” she said. “All cars and bikes qualify and the entry fee $10. The top 10 cars and top 10 bikes will win.”
Messer added that the fair’s “Cuties Contest” will be Monday evening, July 30, starting at 6 p.m.
“If your child is zero months through six-years-old (girl or boy), come join us July 30 at 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds in Lick Creek for the Boone County Cuties contest,” Messer said.
Trophies will be presented in every age division, and the child with the most points will be awarded the “Grand Champion” of the Boone County Fair. The Grand Champion will be the Grand Marshall in the BCF parade on August 4.
The grand prize will be a cash award of $200, Messer added.
“The points do not include the optionals,” she explained. “The optionals are: most beautiful eyes: most beautiful hair: best dressed; and most photogenic. Please circle the optionals you choose.”
To qualify for the grand prize the cost is $50.00 with each optional being $10, she said.
“You do not have to do the optionals to try for the Grand Champion. You may do Grand Champ and all optionals for $70,” she said.
Age divisions are:
Zero through 11 months, 12 months through 23 months, 24 months through 35 months, 36 months through 47 months, and four years through six years.
Just fill out an application with child’s name, age, address, birthdate, parents’ names, if it is a boy or girl, hair color, eye color and telephone number along with a check and mail it to Boone County Fair Association, Virginia Messer, P.O. Box 127, Van, WV 25206.
Messer said the main fair starts on Aug. 1.
“Please remember to bring your crafts, homemade items, paintings, quilts, photos, science fair projects, sewing, woodwork, macramé and any other items not listed,” she said. “Bring them in on July 31 from noon until 4 p.m.”
Messer said all fruits and vegetables should be brought in on Aug. 1 from noon to 3 p.m., which includes fresh and canned.
“Flower should be brought in on Aug. 2, from noon until 3 p.m.,” she added.
