MADISON -- Two of Boone County’s most outstanding athletes in history have been selected Co-Parade Marshals for the 2012 West Virginia Coal Festival. Makenzie White and Adam Coon have been chosen by the West Virginia Coal Festival Planning Committee to lead the Grand Parade for the 19th Annual WV Coal Festival, which will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23. Makenzie White was the West Virginia High School Player of the Year in 2012 after leading the Scott Lady Hawks to three straight State Tournament Title Appearances, and Adam Coon finished 81st in the elite 2012 Boston Marathon out approximately 27,000 runners. White scored 2,130 points during her illustrious hoops career at Scott (the most ever for a Scott basketball player either male or female). She was the Gatorade/ESPN Player of the Year in West Virginia and also was named to the High School Parade Magazine All American team. She received a full athletic scholarship to West Virginia University. White played in the Goodwill Games for Team USA in Argentina during the summer of 2009. The Scott standout was the Boone County Player of the Year for four consecutive years and was first team All-Cardinal Conference during her junior and senior seasons. In addition to her record setting 2,130 points, Mackenzie had 911 rebounds, 656 assists, 362 steals and 141 blocked shots during her career. Coon is a lifelong resident of Comfort and a 2003 graduate of Sherman High School where he competed in track and field, cross country and football. As a senior, Coon finished third in the WV State Meet Single A Division in the 3200 meter run. After graduation from Sherman, Coon attended Concord University and competed in Cross Country and Track and Field. At Concord, he helped his team win the 2004 and 2007 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Cross Country championships. He was selected first team All-Conference as an individual cross country runner in 2004, 2006 and 2007. After graduating from Concord University with a bachelor of Arts Degree in December of 2007, he attended West Virginia State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in December of 2008. He began teaching in Boone County Schools in January of 2008 and began coaching track and field in the spring of 2008, cross country in the fall of 2008, and he also assisted with the varsity football program since the fall of 2008. Coon was hired as a special education teacher at Sherman in 2010. “I began competing in marathons in 2011 when I finished eighth in the National Marathon in Washington, D.C. with a time of 2:37:09,” Coon said. “This qualified me for the Boston Marathon. At the 116th running of the Boston Marathon on April 16, 2012, on one of the hottest Boston Marathons on record, I finished 81st overall out of approximately 27,000 entrants and 22,485 starters.”
