by FROM STAFF REPORTS
They are in Virginia and Kentucky, but hundreds of new coal mining jobs are coming soon. A contracting company is looking to fill more than 800 coal mining jobs in Kentucky and Virgina, according to a report by the Associated Press in The Harlan Daily Enterprise in Harlan County, Kentucky. Officials with Professional Contracting in Norton, Va., are planning to employ workers at five mines that had previously been shut down. Harlan County Judge Executive Joe Grieshop said the news will bring smiles to a lot of faces in eastern Kentucky and the region, where Alpha Natural Resources idled four mines and laid off hundreds of workers in January. More than 2,000 people have already applied for the jobs, but the company is still accepting applications. They are now taking applications to fill 850 jobs and expect to have nearly 4,000 jobs up for grabs in the future, it has been reported. Applicants must apply in-person at the office in Norton.
