Boy critically injured by pellet gun
by FRED PACE, EDITOR
A 7-year-old Boone County boy remains in critical condition after being accidentally shot in the chest with a pellet gun, according to Boone County Sheriff Rodney Miller. Miller said the boy was accidentally shot Tuesday night, Aug. 14, at a home in Seth after he and his sibling were playing with the pellet gun when it discharged. “Some people think of a pellet gun as a toy, but it’s not a toy,” Miller said. “This young boy is now in the hospital in critical condition fighting for his life.” Miller said the incident remains under investigation. “We are trying to figure out where the adults were, how they got this weapon and why it wasn’t in a secure place,” Miller said. “There's no excuse. We can’t afford to let children injure themselves or each other by accident. Weapons were only created for one reason and that’s to kill; whether it's to hunt for game or for protection.” Pellet guns don't fall under the same laws as other firearms; meaning there’s no license or training required, Miller added. “Still, anyone that buys one of these weapons still needs to be extra careful, especially when children are around,” he said. According to a report by WSAZ-TV 3, the television news station did speak with the boy's parents at the hospital Thursday afternoon, Aug. 16, but they only wished to say that their son has come a long way and they're hopeful. Miller said the investigation is ongoing and that it is possible that the parents could be charged with a crime.

I personally know the mother of this child and I can say that she is a wonderful, responsible, caring mother who loves her children. I would not care to leave my own children in her care if the need was to rise. These things can happen. You can't keep your eye on all your children 24-7. You just can't. I just pray that the family can find peace in this horrible time and that the little boy recovers with no lingering medical problems.
