Poll: 53 percent of West Virginians support medical marijuana
by FRED PACE, EDITOR
A recent poll conducted by Public Policy Polling shows that 53 percent of West Virginia citizens support medical marijuana. The poll released by the Marijuana Policy Project finds most West Virginians support legalizing medical marijuana for “seriously and terminally ill patients” who have a doctor's recommendation. “I don’t see anything wrong with it, especially if a doctor prescribes it to you for a medical condition,” said 32-year-old Brett Adkins. According to the poll results, most of those under 65-years-old favor the legalization of medical marijuana and most of them even favor decriminalization of recreational use of marijuana. However, those over 65-years-old overwhelmingly are against legalizing it in any form. “West Virginia already has enough problems with illegal drug use and legalizing marijuana is not the answer to those problems,” said 68-year-old Betsy Fowler. The poll also finds that 63 percent of West Virginians think marijuana is a “safer treatment for debilitating pain” than Oxycontin, abuse of which has been rampant in Boone County and the Appalachian region for more than a decade. MPP's announcement of the poll results included the news that West Virginia House of Delegates Rep. Mike Manypenny (D-Taylor) will introduce medical marijuana legislation in 2013. Wow, hard to imagine. Legalizing for Medical purpose’s is great it is a natural option instead of narcotic drugs to help those with illness. Also legalizing industrial hemp would put alot of people in jobs. An annual harvest for fuel, building material, clothing, paper, etc. All kinds of opportunity to save alot of our trees. It’s a natural resource that could be used for so many things. By the way I am 63 yrs old.
