WEST MADISON – Scott Skyhawks head coach Shane Griffith said he wanted a ground and pound game against Corridor G rivals Chapmanville and that is exactly what he got in the team’s big win Friday night over the Tigers.

Scott (3-0) had two runners rush for over 100 yards each and another added 74 yards as the Skyhawks grounded out a 40-21 win over Chapmanville (1-2).

“We said before the game we wanted to control the line of scrimmage, and that is exactly what we did,” Griffith said.

Robert Bias carried the ball 22 times for 161 yards and Cameron Loftus ran 15 times for 131 yards and three touchdowns. Loftus was named WZAC’s player of the game.

“The offensive line blocked great tonight” Loftus said. “Our linemen are the leaders of our team and we just come into each game believing we can control the line on both sides of the ball.”

Scott’s defensive backs also played well in the game, knocking down several passes and coming up with key interceptions and turnovers. Chapmanville quarterback Max Spradlin hit on only 11 of 20 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

Scott’s Tryston Crone ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns and also played well on defensive.

“It was a total team effort,” Griffith said. “We respect our opponents, but we focus on us and what we need to do and what we can do.”

The Tigers trailed just 21-14 at the half, but committed four costly turnovers.

Chapmanville went ahead 7-0 with 42 seconds left in the first quarter as Dustin Smith scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. Dustin Conley added the extra point kick.

Scott tied it 7-7 with Cameron Loftis’ 3-yard touchdown run with 9:13 left until the half.

The Skyhawks then took the lead for good at 14-7 with Tristan Crone’s 5-yard TD run at the 6:58 mark.

Scott soon made it 21-7 with a 1-yard touchdown run by Crone.

Chapmanville then pulled to within 21-14 at the intermission as quarterback Spradlin passed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon White on the last play of the half.

In the second half, however, it was all Skyhawks.

Crone’s 11-yard TD run with 3:11 left in the third upped the margin to 28-14.

Loftis then added a 5-yard touchdown run with 44 ticks to go in the period to push the lead to 34-14. The extra point kick was blocked by Brady Cox.

Scott, though, came right back with 7:05 left in the game with a 2-yard TD run by Loftis. Chapmanville’s Waylon Dingess blocked the PAT, leaving the score at 40-14.

The Tigers scored once more with 3:11 left on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Spradlin to Devin Wiley. Matt Chapman’s extra point kick was good.

Scott was penalized 11 times for 60 yards. The Tigers were thrown five yellow hankies for 45 yards.

The Cardinal Conference victory was a big one and the Skyhawks are expected to be ranked high in the Class AA WVSSAC polls this week.

Sophomore Dezmond Cordero continued to be impressive as the team’s kicker and punter. Cordero converted several extra-point kicks and had deep kickoffs and punts that pinned the Tigers deep in their own territory several times during the game.

“Dezmond is a great addition,” Griffith said. “In my 13 seasons, I don’t know that we have had a weapon kicking the football.”

Scott travels to Sissonville this Friday night in another Cardinal Conference matchup. The game will be broadcast live on WZAC 92.5 FM beginning at 7 p.m.
