A coal miner was killed Friday morning in an accident at the Coal River Mining LLC Fork Creek mine #10 in Boone County. Johnny Mack Bryant II, 35, of Lenore, was killed in the accident about 4 a.m., according to Public Information Specialist, Leslie Fitzwater. Bryant was a move crew employee, Fitzwater said. Fitzwater confirmed that Bryant was crushed by a piece of machinery. The accident happened on the day the UBB Memorial had its dedication ceremony in Whitesville. The memorial was constructed to remember The Upper Big Branch Mine disaster that occurred on April 5, 2010, and killed 29 miners. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin acknowledged Bryant’s loss with a moment of silence at the dedication ceremony. Also last week, man was severely injured when the coal truck he was driving rolled over in Fayette County. It happened just before 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, 2012, on Mammoth Coal property near Alloy. The driver, whose name has not been released, was trapped inside the truck for over an hour. State Police from the Quincy detachment responded with county deputies. Troopers said the man was responsive, but appeared to be badly hurt. Firefighters and paramedics also responded to the scene. Troopers are working to determine what caused the truck to roll over.
