Community fed up with drugs and break-ins
by Alex Snyder, WSAZ.COM
MADISON (WSAZ) -- This little town in Boone County has a big problem. "But now it's getting to the point where we're having so many break-ins on homes. They're invading people's homes to get their drug money," said Vernon Eversole, a Madison resident whose home and business both have been broken into. And residents say they’re not going to take it anymore. "You have to step up and say enough is enough. I can't walk or talk to anybody that's either been a victim or they know of a person that's been a victim," said Debbie Eversole, who is organizing a community watch group to fight back. The Eversoles own and run Vernon’s Auto Repair. Their shop has been broken into twice, and their home has been broken into once. They’ve put up security cameras around their house, and they’re willing to do just about anything to get drugs off the streets because they’re fed up. "I would do anything to help anyone," Vernon Eversole said. "I mean, even that person out there on the street who needs help -- I'm the type of person that would do that. They got me to the point now that when I look at one of them, I want to choke them." So, he and Debbie Eversole started a community watch group, and they're asking anyone to get involved. They say the drugs and home break-ins are not going away. "This is one time I'm not quitting," Debbie Eversole said. "I feel like a pit bull dog after raw meat. And that's exactly how I'm going after this. I will not give up." Saying they’re stronger in numbers, the Eversoles say it’s time for the community to fight back. "People around here -- I don't want to get involved, I'm scared of what they may do to me. I'm not scared of no one. And I'll tell you, I don't care. I've got a gun, and it's not for hunting. It's for people, and I think people out here need to bare up and get stronger," Vernon Eversole said. He also has a message for those who are causing the problems. "If you want to fry your brain and you want to do things like that, don't bother the innocent people," he said. "And that's what's drug are doing to us down here."
