Incident involving Boone Deputy under investigation
by FRED PACE, EDITOR
SOUTH CHARLESTON – Although no criminal charges have been filed, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department and the South Charleston Police Department are investigating an incident that happened Sunday at an Exxon gas station at Southridge Shopping Center. Southridge Shopping Center is located just off U.S. 119 (Corridor G) in South Charleston. South Charleston Police said the initial reports alleges the deputy, his wife and another man became involved in an argument outside of the gas station and then it turned physical between the two men. One report stated that the deputy was choking the man. The incident ended when police say the deputy got into his cruiser and rammed the car the man and the deputy's wife were in. Police say there was no damage to the cruiser and the car only suffered minor damage. Boone County Sheriff Rodney Miller says the deputy has been placed on administrative leave and an internal investigation is underway. “He is on administrative leave pending the results of our investigation,” Miller said. Miller added that the matter is being taken seriously, but after reviewing the store’s video surveillance it doesn’t appear as bad as an incident that was initially reported. “No criminal charges have been filed against anyone regarding this incident and it doesn’t appear at this point that there will be any filed,” Miller said. However, Miller said his department is looking at possible violations of internal best practices, policies and procedures by a deputy. “We will take the appropriate action, if necessary, following our internal investigation,” Miller added. The deputy's name has not been released just yet. Miller says he is waiting for more information from South Charleston Police before deciding what if any discipline the deputy may face. South Charleston Police also said neither side wants to press any charges.
