“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended; but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14).
Each year I tell myself, “This year, I’m going to turn over a new leaf. I’m going to exercise regularly and lose weight. I’m going to do all kinds of things to improve myself physical and spiritual life.” But then some how I forget. Maybe you have that same problem also?
So this year coming up I have a suggestion for a New Year’s resolution that we ought to be able to remember. It is kind of broad and very general, but here it is , let’s promise ourselves and God that we will make a change for the better. This year, as God’s people, as His church, let’s make this one simple resolution, we’re going to make a change for the better.
I believe that the first thing we need to do is to have a better and positive outlook toward life. How do you feel about your life ? Is it worthwhile? What would it take for you to feel that your life is worthwhile? What would have to happen to make you feel really positive about your life? New job, a new car, for some win the lottery? What would it take for you to make you feel really positive above your life?
Now if that’s the way you are then you’ll probably never feel really positive about life because all the little pieces that must come together to make you positive about life will probably never be there. That is where Philippians 3:12-14 come in. When Paul wrote this he was in jail, chained to a Roman guard, under horrible condition. Yet despite this, he writes these wonderful words. You might ask yourself, “What is he reaching for? What is his goal? Paul’s goal is the resurrection from the dead. His goal is eternal life with Jesus. That’s what he is reaching for and striving for every day he was on this earth. His goal is heaven.
Now here is the point. If our goal is heaven, if our goal is eternal life with Jesus Christ, then all these little setbacks in your life are only stepping stones to getting us closer to Jesus.
I have find out in my life, that there is going be some setback the closer I get to my finish line. Look what Paul tells us in Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
The world would tell us different, but the Bible tells us that the way to feel good about ourselves is because God loves us. We are such a treasured person in God’s eyes that He gave His only Begotten Son for us. That makes you valuable and we can fell good about yourself !
