HOLLYWOOD Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. is one step closer to winning a million dollars and headlining his own Las Vegas show after fans voted him into the semifinal round of "America's Got Talent."
Murphy learned his fate last night during the live results show. Murphy sung "Fly Me To The Moon", which is a song made popular by Frank Sinatra, on Tuesday night's live quarterfinal round of the TV reality talent show. Murphy advances to the semifinal round, set to begin after the quarterfinals wrap up.
The entertainer-hopefuls were brought out in groups and told their fate by host Nick Cannon. The first three entertainers brought out were all sent home, while Murphy and PopLyfe, a teen rock band, were brought out together and told they were being sent on into the semis.
"I was really, really worried to see these two going head-to-head," Judge Sharon Osbourne said after it was announced that both Murphy and PopLyfe had made it through. "I'm delighted. There is a place for each one of you in the music industry today. I feel so strongly that both of you are going to be in the final."
When the news was announced, PopLyfe erupted into cheers and hugs, while Murphy stood calm. That is, until PopLyfe swarmed him and everyone started hugging and celebrating.
"I feel like I'm on top of the world," Murphy said. "Thank you for putting (PopLyfe) through, because I don't know how I would have taken this from these young people. I don't know how I would have done that."
PopLyfe's lead singer, Keilani, called Murphy "one of the greatest," as she tried to find words to express how she felt about making it into the semifinal round of the competition.
Next week's round of 12 will also eliminate eight more contestants.
"America's Got Talent" airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on WSAZ TV 3 (NBC).
Fans were able to vote following Tuesday night's live round. Fans could vote by
calling in by phone, vote over the internet or text their vote and many voters called from landlines and cell phones, while also voting via text and online. Up to 10 votes could be cast over a single phone, by texting and online. Several people posted on facebook that they had voted up to 40 times by calling from their cell phone, their home phone, by texting and voting online at NBC.com.
Murphy is a Logan native who had been washing cars for a living. He has been a popular singer at various events locally over the years.
