Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant has an important message today for people who want to cast a ballot in West Virginia in October but arent registered to vote.
If youre not registered to vote but you want to cast a ballot in the upcoming special election for Governor, youre running out of time, Secretary Tennant, the states chief elections officer, said Monday. The deadline for new voters to register is Tuesday, September 13.
Citizens can pick up a voter registration application at the Secretary of States Office in the State Capitol or at several other state agency offices, like the Division of Motor Vehicles. The voter registration application can also be downloaded from the Secretary of States website at www.wvsos.com, filled out, and mailed in. Citizens can also contact their county clerks office for voter registration information. A roster of county clerks with contact information and location can be found on the Secretary of States website.
According to the Statewide Voter Registration System maintained by the Secretary of States Office, as of September 12 there are 1,213,799 registered voters in West Virginia. There are 643,699 people registered as Democrat, 350,035 registered as Republican, and 199,437 registered with no party affiliation. About 20,000 voters are registered Mountain Party or another political party.
West Virginians can also see the Voters Bill of Rights on the Secretary of States website.
Early voting for the 2011 special gubernatorial general election begins on September 21. Voters can cast their ballot early at their courthouse or courthouse annex during regular business hours.
Early voting will also be available on Saturday, September 24 and October 1. October 1 is also the final day of early voting.
Voting will be available at precincts around the state on October 4, 2011 from 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM.
