A representative of the county’s eight volunteer fire departments has asked the Boone County Commission to support a proposal that would charge non-Boone County residents when fire departments are called to auto accidents they might be involved in.
The county has approved a proposal that would allow the department to charge up to a $250 fee to any non-resident or any business which is a non-resident of the county. The departments can also charge a fee of up to $100 for each hour that they are on scene providing rescue services.
The costs would be billed to the motorist’s auto insurance. The new ordinance would also allow departments to charge the motorists for the abatement or removal of any hazardous materials, such as spilled gasoline, diesel fuel or motor oil that is spilled on the highway. The proposal was approved on December 19.
In other commission news, county crews will be releasing nearly $5,000 worth of trout into Boone County streams next month. County Administrator James Gore said commissioners understand how popular fishing is to Boone residents, and they want to encourage any sports that bring families together.
“Husbands and wives, fathers and sons, not to mention daughters, love to fish,” Gore said. “In past years, we have watched the excitement on the faces of anglers when we were releasing the fish into Boone County streams. We want that to continue.” Gore said the trout would be released on January 18 & 19, 2007.
Commissioners were told that long-time courthouse employee Eloise Lucas would be retiring. Lucas, who is an employee of the county commission accounting department, worked primarily in the office of County Clerk Gary Williams. Lucas came to work for Boone County on December 15, 1980.
The county has asked for bids from Arnett and Foster, a Charleston area accounting firm, to provide specialized services for the commission. Gore said the firm would be asked to provide information on the viability of renovation projects for Boone Memorial Hospital.
“We want them to look into what is needed, what is affordable, and what renovations Boone Memorial can afford financially.
Boone County Office of Emergency Services Director Greg Lay will be moving from his office in the 911 Center to the second floor of the Boone County Courthouse Annex in the new year.
His office will be located on the second floor of the old Boone County Jail, in the same building where commission offices and the county family court is located.
Gore said anyone needing building permits will need to go there starting early next month. The phone number will be the same.
