The Charleston Police Department said Saturday that the death of a Madison resident was due to driving the wrong way on I-64.
Sgt. Shawn Williams, of the Charleston Police Department Crash Investigation Unit, said Adrianne Danielle Bailey, 27, of Madison, apparently hit a pickup truck head-on while driving the wrong way on Interstate 64.
Williams said investigators believe the woman, who was dead at the scene, was driving eastward in the westbound lane of Interstate 64 near the Oakwood Road interchange when she struck a vehicle driven by Billy Poff, who was delivering newspapers at the time.
Neither driver was wearing seatbelts, according to police.
Willams added that “we believe alcohol was a factor in the crash for both drivers.”
Sgt. Williams said it was believed that Bailey entered the wrong lanes of traffic at the South Charleston exit or the MacCorkle Avenue exit and traveled to the bridge, where the accident happened.
Reports said Bailey was traveling about 60 miles an hour when she collided with Poff's truck.
Police said Poff only suffered minor injuries probably due to the fact that he was transporting numerous large bundles of newspapers, which shielded him during the accident. He was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital with minor injuries.
