On December 24, Boone County Sheriff Rodney Miller alleged that Jason Gillispie, 24, of Alum Creek, entered Sterno’s Bar. What led up to it is still unclear, but Miller believes that the young man at some point killed Walter P. McDerment, 47, of Ridgeview. The West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office in South Charleston said death was due to blunt force trauma to McDerment’s head with a pool stick.
Law enforcement from Boone and Kanawha Counties found Gillispie hiding at his parents home in Alum Creek later on Christmas Day and took him into custody without incident.
The man has been housed in the Southwestern Regional Jail since that date, and last week he was before Boone County Judge William Thompson seeking bond. Thompson agreed to allow Gillispie to post bail, but set the amount he would have to put up at $1 million. The court said Gillispie would either have to post the cash bond, or put up at least $1 million in property to secure the bond. A third option for the Gillispie family would be to find a private bail bondsman willing to post the young man’s bond, but the family would likely have to own enough property to secure the bond.
Gillispie’s case could be a subject of the Boone County Grand Jury, which is scheduled to meet again, starting next week.
