He was born Dec. 4, 1950, in Madison. He was a loving father and grandfather.
He was a 40-year member of the Madison Volunteer Fire Department where he served four years as Chief and 20 years as Assistant Chief. He organized the first Boone County Fire School and many other Boone County Fire Schools after that. He was instrumental in organizing the West Virginia State Fireman's Association Convention in Charleston and was a former first vice president of that association where he served many years as a member of the Legislative Committee. He was a Fire Service Instruction for West Virginia University and RESA and he was invaluable in organizing and teaching in many fire schools in West Virginia.
Roger was employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways for 13 years as a construction inspector during the construction of “Corridor G” through Boone and Logan Counties. He retired from that position to become the first Emergency Services Director in Boone County. Chief Jarrell was a mentor to many firefighters in the area and was well known and respected for his knowledge and expertise in the fire service throughout the state of West Virginia.
Even though Chief Jarrell was disabled by the ravaging effects of diabetes he continued to help in the organization of area fire schools from the confines of his wheelchair and computer.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jarrell; three daughters, Anna Burgess of Winfield and her children, Dustin, Alicia, Megan and Patrick, Dawn Buckner of Southport, N.C. and her children, Joshua and Cheye Anna, Crystal Berry of Madison and her children, Austin, Nathan, Samantha and Adam; and one brother, Dennis Jarrell of Newark, Del.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Matt Jackson, Jim Nelson and Chuck Runyon officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations be sent to the Roger Jarrell Funeral Expense Fund at Boone County Bank, P.O. Box 7, Madison, WV 25130 to help with burial expenses.
