A group of Boone veterans, long respected in the county, have received statewide recognition for their good works.

The membership of Daniel Boone Post 5578 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars were honored on June 24th by other veterans groups for outstanding community service achievements in Boone County. Post 5578 includes veterans of World War II, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm and the Iraq conflict.

The following awards were given to the Madison veterans. They received honors for Commander of the Year, Quartermaster of the Year and three other awards. In addition, newly elected Post Commander Mike Dunlap took office.

The post was given accolades for their work in helping disabled veterans, widows of veterans, and for the food baskets they provide to hundreds of needy families each Christmas season.

Post members also provide color guards for parades, funerals, memorial services, and are an integral part of the West Virginia Coal Festival each June.

Dunlap told CVN “Had it not been for community support, and for the hard work of our membership, none of the awards we received last week would have been possible.”
