Firefighters battled a blaze Saturday night that destroyed an old Madison store building.

Rumors circulated that there was at least one person squatting in the dilapidated structure, which formerly housed Degler Jewelry, but fire fighters were unable to locate anyone inside.

Madison and Danville fire departments responded to the fire on Main Street in downtown Madison and the three-story building was fully involved with fire venting 30 feet through the roof, a press statement from Madison Fire Chief Jim Lambert said.

"Firefighters were able to quickly known down the blaze using large streams of water from deck guns mounted on their fire engines and an aerial truck that responded from Racine Fire Department," Lambert said in the release. "Units from Madison and Danville were on the scene from 1:53 a.m. until 6:50 a.m. extingushing hot spots."

Units from Spruce River, Van and Morrisvale were placed on stand-by for Madison and Danville. There were 36 firefighters battling the early-morning blaze.

"Arson is the cause of the fire and there are a couple of good leads to the person responsible," Lambert said in the release.

The state Fire Marshal's office and the Madison Police Department are investigating the fire. A state Fire Marshal official was on the scene Monday morning assessing the damage, but said he didn't have any additional information on the fire.

Traffic was detoured down the back street behind Madison due to the fire. The structure is still standing.

Another fire destroyed a man's home at Low Gap.

Crews were on the scene Monday evening battling a re-ignited fire about a mile up Laurel Branch Road on Route 17.

The Sunday night fire completely destroyed the home of Frank Sontag, who was on the scene when the blaze restarted Monday.

"I just found out about it burning today," Sontag said as he watched Danville firefighters spray water onto the burning debris. "I was remodeling it and it burned up my new windows and doors. It burned everything."

Sontag said he was in Madison when the fire started and had gone to Logan early Monday and learned his house burned when he returned home from Logan.

No one was inside the home, he said, noting that he lives alone.

"No one got ahold of me to tell me it had burned down," he said.

Danville, Madison and Spruce River fire departments responded to the blaze.
