Sporting a so-so 3-2 mark after five games, the Skyhawks found themselves perched squarely opposite a traditional rivalry in a crucial, mid-season contest at Logan Stadium.
Both teams were looking to bounce back from losses with the added pressure of Class AA playoff implications.
Scott senior standout Jordan Roberts raced through Logan’s defense for 286 yards and five touchdowns on 19 carries. He also completed 2-of-4 passes for 65 yards.
Roberts and junior Drew Runyan hooked up for a 52-yard pass early in the first quarter to move the Skyhawks inside Logan’s 20-yard line and set up Scott’s first touchdown.
Five plays later, Roberts bolted across the goal line for a three-yard touchdown. The extra point kick failed, but Scott had a 6-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the opening period.
Paced by the running of senior Cody Baisden, the Wildcats answered with a scoring drive that produced points late in the first quarter. Baisden, who picked up two first downs with key third-down carries, tallied an 18-yard run to force a 6-6 tie.
With both defenses making big stops, the 6-6 stalemate remained locked until late in the second quarter.
On the first play following Logan’s missed field goal attempt, Roberts broke loose for a 76-yard touchdown late in the second stanza.
Scott then moved into a 14-6 lead when Runyan completed the two-point conversion pass.
Scott senior Billy Aldridge turned in a key defensive play early in the second half when he picked off a Logan pass to give the Skyhawks possession inside the Wildcats’ 35-yard line.
Roberts opened the short drive with a 10-yard run. Four plays later, he capped the effort with a 20-yard touchdown run. Capitalizing on Aldridge’s interception, the Skyhawks led 20-6 with 8:04 remaining in the third quarter.
After the Skyhawks’ defense forced another punt, Roberts and Scott’s offense struck for another Gold Lightning score to extend their lead.
Following a 13-yard pass from Roberts to sophomore Tyler Thompson, Roberts bolted through Logan’s defense for a 57-yard touchdown run. Scott’s two-point run attempt failed, but the Skyhawks led 26-6 midway through the third quarter.
The Wildcats’ offense countered with a scoring march as quarterback Trey Taylor used short passes to running backs Robert Shell and Baisden to sustain a drive. Baisden highlighted the drive with a four-yard touchdown run that, along with Josh Wilson’s extra point kick, sliced the lead to 26-13.
The Skyhawks promptly moved back into a commanding 34-13 lead as Roberts shook loose for a 65-yard touchdown run and Runyan tacked on the two-point conversion run.
A seven-yard sack by senior Dennis Roberts helped the Scott defense halt the Wildcats’ next possession, and the Skyhawks iced the rivalry win when senior Randy Bishop slashed Logan’s defense for a 45-yard touchdown run. Scott’s extra point attempt failed, but the Skyhawks led 40-13.
Logan freshman David Brown connected with Thomas Adkins for a 16-yard touchdown pass to complete the scoring late in the fourth period.
Scott offensive linemen Aaron Thompson, Dennis Roberts, Chase Woodruff, Greg Parkins and Eric Price — along with Thompson at tight end — paved the way for Roberts and Scott’s ground game to dominate second-half action.
Cody Baisden (12 rushes for 116 yards) and Chris Tolliver (13 runs for 68 yards) led the Wildcats’ offensive effort.
Tied with Magnolia in last week’s Class AA playoff ratings, No. 10 Scott looked to climb a couple of spots in this week’s rankings with the win over No. 12 Logan and losses by several teams that were ahead of the Skyhawks.
Scott (4-2) is idle this week and will host Shady Spring on Oct. 12.
