WEST MADISON — Building ever-important February momentum and looking to move up in the Mountain State’s Class AA boys basketball rankings, the Scott Skyhawks snared three big wins last week to raise their season record to 15-4.

The Skyhawks now have won 12 of their last 13 games.

Scott 62, Westside 49

The Skyhawks picked up win No. 13 at home last Wednesday night with a 62-49 win over the Renegades.

Scott led 16-7 after the first quarter and 26-19 at halftime.

Junior guard Steven McComas netted a three-pointer and two free throws to help the Skyhawks bolt to a 14-0 start.

Senior guard Marcus Linville ignited the run with a three-pointer. Senior forward Greg Parkins added a pair of in-the-paint hoops to Scott’s early spurt.

Senior forward Jared Jarrell scored six second-period points as the Skyhawks maintained a double-digit lead for most of the stanza. Jarrell’s short jumper bumped Scott’s lead to 12 points at 24-12 before Westside rallied to slice the advantage entering the intermission.

Jarrell and Parkins each tallied five third-period points to fuel a 16-10 Scott effort. Parkins drilled a three-pointer early in the frame, while Jarrell’s offensive rebound and hoop late in the quarter stretched the Skyhawks’ upper hand to 42-29.

Paced by a pair of three-pointers by sophomore guard Dan Hicks, Westside pulled to within eight points at 49-41 midway through the final frame, but the Skyhawks promptly halted the Renegades’ bid for a rally with a game-clinching 6-0 spurt.

Jarrell netted two in-the-paint buckets to spark the key spurt. Senior guard Earl “Trey” Workman added a short jumper as the Skyhawks claimed a commanding 55-41 lead with just over two minutes left.

Jarrell (20 points and seven rebounds) and Parkins (17 points and 12 rebounds) powered the Scott win with strong inside play.

McComas contributed eight points and a team-high six assists. Junior guard Carl Shaffer added six points and six rebounds.

Workman had six points and four assists. Linville pitched in five points and four assists.

Junior forward Eric Bailey led the Westside offense with 19 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter.

“Once again, our defense was the key to a Skyhawk win,” Scott coach Jason Kingery told the Coal Valley News after the game. “Early in the game, we forced some turnovers and jumped out to a big start. We also kept Westside off of the offensive boards throughout the game, and we held their best scorer (Bailey) to five points during the first half.”

Scott 73, Chapmanville 50

Looking to make a statement on the road against a potential sectional foe, the Skyhawks flew out to an 18-8 first-period lead and an in-charge 38-16 halftime lead.

Parkins poured in 17 first-half points, including a trio of three-pointers, to pace Scott’s first-half scoring. Jarrell added 10 first-half markers for the Skyhawks.

Junior center Brendan Watson and Shaffer each netted four third-period points as Scott took a 53-27 advantage into the fourth stanza.

Substituting freely in the final period, 12 players on the Skyhawks’ 14-man roster got into the scoring act.

Scott finished the game with 26 two-pointers, four three-pointers and 9-of-15 free throws. Chapmanville netted 16 two-pointers, two three-pointers and 12-of-17 free throws.

Parkins topped the Skyhawks’ offense with a game-high 18 points. Jarrell tossed in 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Linville added 10 points. McComas and Workman each passed for seven assists. Watson, sophomore center Tyler Thompson and sophomore forward Chase Woodruff each tallied four points.

Steve Bailey led the host Tigers with 11 points. Ethan Brumfield netted nine points, all in the fourth quarter.

“We played very well, especially on defense,” Kingery said. “We forced 15 turnovers and held one of their top players scoreless. We jumped on them early, sending a message with our play and taking their crowd out of the game.”

Scott 57, Chesapeake, Ohio 55

The visiting Skyhawks rallied from a double-digit deficit in the final four minutes to knock off one of the Buckeye State’s Top 10 Division III teams on Saturday night.

Scott led 16-13 after one quarter, but trailed 31-26 at halftime.

Parkins (10) and Shaffer (nine) combined for 19 first-half points to keep the Skyhawks within striking distance.

Chesapeake took a 43-37 lead into the final stanza and led 54-44 with 3:38 left to play before the Skyhawks pulled off a clutch rally.

The Skyhawks’ pressure defense keyed the memorable comeback, as Scott converted four turnovers into three two-point buckets and one three-point basket.

Jarrell netted two free throws with 1:46 remaining to force a 52-52 deadlock. Linville forced a 54-54 tie when he tossed in a two-pointer over a pair of Chesapeake defenders.

Jarrell’s layup with 45 seconds left gave Scott a 56-54 edge. Workman’s free throw with 22 seconds remaining pushed the lead to 57-54.

Chesapeake added a free throw in the final seconds, but Jarrell rebounded a missed free throw to clinch the win.

McComas paced Scott’s come-from-behind effort with nine fourth-quarter points, including a key three-pointer and a 2-for-2 effort from the charity stripe.

Jarrell added eight fourth-period points for the Skyhawks.

McComas finished with 14 points, four assists and four rebounds. Parkins had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Jarrell added 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Shaffer contributed 11 points and four rebounds. Linville scored four points and grabbed four rebounds.

Aaron Ross (four three-pointers) and Tyler Shoemaker (eight second-period points) each finished with 14 points to top the Chesapeake scoring.

Scott connected on 18 two-pointers, three three-pointers and 12-of-20 free throws. Chesapeake netted 16 two-pointers, five three-pointers and 8-of-17 charity shots.

“Our team dedicated this big road win to the Skyhawk fans who helped us financially to support our team last summer and to all of our fans who have supported us this season,” Kingery said. “Playing a very good team in a very tough setting, our players never gave up. Despite trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter, we still expected to win.

“A win like this, plus the fact that we have now won 12 of our last 13 games, really gives our team some momentum as we go through February and head toward tourney time.”

Scott hosted Williamson on Tuesday. Results from that game were unavailable for this week’s issue but will be published in next week’s edition.

Up next for Scott (15-4) is a road game against Charleston Catholic on Friday and a home game against Lincoln County on Tuesday.

“We want to invite our fans to attend the Lincoln County contest and help us honor our seniors on Senior Night,” Kingery said. “We are proud of our 15-4 record and we appreciate the support of our fans.”

Scott will compete with Boone County rival Sherman and Corridor G rival Chapmanville in the Class AA Region 6, Section 1 tournament on Feb. 26-29 at the Williamson Field House.
