A special Happy Birthday goes to Anna Massey, who celebrated her 88th birthday on April 8. Anna lives in Mansfield, Ohio, but is a former resident of Ferndale-Garrison near Whitesville. She and her late husband, Vivian Massey, were married in 1940 and left the area in 1955. She receives the Coal Valley News and enjoys reading it very much, especially the Whitesville News. Her address is Anna Massey, 835 Ferndale Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44907 if anyone wants to send her a card. She still has family living in this area. I hope she has a great birthday.

Now that Easter has passed for this year and all of the Easter decorations have been put away, I began to try to find out why we have those things for Easter. Easter is the time we celebrate Jesus being risen from the grave after giving His life to death on the cross for all who will accept him as their Savior, paying for their sins. So, can anyone tell me what the eggs, rabbits and baskets filled with candy have to do with Easter and the way we celebrate the resurrection of our Savior? I hope to hear from someone who might know the answer.

My granddaughter, Sara Harris, said her husband, John, now is serving the Army in Iraq. She said he will be there for about a year and a half. So, please pray for protection for him and pray for her while she waits for his return home.

The Whitesville First Baptist Church is the place for all young people and adults to go on April 19, when it will have a family Wii Night. If you haven't heard about Wii, it is Nintendo's new video game system. I hear you are missing out on a lot of fun. There are games the whole family can engage in with a little friendly competition. The members of the church hope to see you there. Everyone is invited to attend. A family prayer time has been set for 6 p.m. at the church to pray for special needs and give thanks to the Lord for all of his blessings and the Wii activities will follow at 7 p.m. in the activity building.

Doris Flowers, of Sylvester, still is hoping someone will return her card folder and its contents that she lost a couple of weeks ago possibly in the Whitesville area. Please call her at 854-2728 if you have any information about her folder.

I just came home after attending a Easter play at the Pettus Baptist Church, which was put together by Debbie Banks, a member of the church. Debbie and all of the cast members did a wonderful job, both the adults and the children. Everyone was invited to stay for refreshments and a time of Christian fellowship. The play was very touching, especially the scenes with Pastor Paul Lucas, who portrayed Jesus hung on the cross between two young boys who portrayed the two thieves.

Larry Bonds, of Birchton, needs your prayers. He is at this writing in Beckley Appalachian Hospital. I hope he is better soon.

Cary Lou Jarrell, of Sylvester, is having some health problems and might need surgery. Please pray for her. My prayer is she will be better real soon.

Best wishes go to Ruth Spears Peters, of Sylvester, for a belated happy birthday. She celebrated her 87th birthday on March 26. Ruth was a former employee of Branaham's Hardware as well as the Ben Franklin and Haddads department stores in Whitesville. She was a very dear friend of my late mother, Pauline Montgomery. I hope she has many more birthdays to celebrate.

The Baptist fellowship meeting that originally was scheduled for March 9 at the Seth Healing Stream Baptist Church has been rescheduled for April 13. Everyone is invited to attend. There will be lots of special singing, a praise worship time and refreshments will be served following the meeting.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of James Finley Massey, 91, of Beckley, who passed away on March 20. He was well loved by his family and friends.

Earth day will be April 22 planting a tree is good for the environment so since trees remove carbon dioxide from the air why not plant a tree to help us all breath better. Maybe plant a fruit tree, eat the fruit it produces as a extra bonus.

As I close this column this week I want to leave you with the following scripture. Ezekiel 11:19-20 And I will give them one heart and I will put a new spirit within you, and I will take the stony heart of their flesh, and will give them a new heart of flesh. That they may walk in my statutes and keep mine ordinance and do them and they shall be my people and I will be their God.

When someone accepts God into their lives they will never be the same again. God takes the weak and makes them strong. takes the vile and makes them clean. takes the worthless and makes them worth while and takes away all their sins. I wish to thank all who sent me a Easter Card. each one was appreciated and made me feel special I thank God for each of you.
