Wyson Bartley, 54, is facing federal gun and drug charges after West Virginia State Troopers arrested Bartley following the issuance of a federal warrant.

A federal indictment was filed on April 30 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia against Bartley.

Kevin Harper, lead investigating officer with the West Virginia State Troopers, Hamlin Detachment, said, “‘We did an investigation last July and the federal arrest took place this past weekend.”

“He was indicted by a federal jury, and then they issued a warrant for his arrest. Myself and three other troopers made the arrest,” Harper said.

When asked why it took so long from the time of the offenses to the arrest, Harper said, “This was the first time they were able to present it to the federal grand jury.”

Trooper Harper, Sr. Trooper Lively, Trooper Boyles, and K-9 Unit Corporal Harper were able to quickly make the arrest before federal marshals arrived in the area.

According to the criminal indictment, Bartley faces three counts of knowingly and intentionally distributing a quantity of marijuana, a Schedule I controlled substance on three separate occasions- July 21, 28, and 30.

According to Harper, on the various occasions, Harper was found with numerous prescription pills, marijuana, large amounts of cash, and, during this last occurrence, an illegal firearm.

According to court documents, Bartley is also charged with possession of a firearm, namely a loaded Rexico, .38-caliber revolver, on or about July 30, 2007 at or near Chapmanville.

At the time that Bartley possessed the firearm he had been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year, on or about February 10, 1992 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of W.Va. on prior drug charges, according to court documents.

“He’s had at least three prior felony convictions,” Harper said.

Bartley is currently incarcerated at South Central Regional Jail and is scheduled to appear before Judge Mary E. Stanley on May 8, at 10 a.m. in Courtroom 5400 for a detention hearing.

“I think with the history of him selling drugs to kids in Boone and Logan Counties that they’ll probably keep him in jail,” Harper said.
