Skyhawks' season ends in loss to Wildcats

The Scott Skyhawks' baseball season came to an abrupt end last week with a pair of losses in the double-elimination Class AA Region 4 Section 3 tournament at Logan High School.

Scott lost 14-4 to Chapmanville on Tuesday and 11-0 to Logan on Saturday.

Junior Kameron Akers was 2-for-3 against Chapmanville. Seniors Eric Gibson and Corey Prince and juniors Eric Price and Drew Runyan all were 1-for-3 against Logan.

Scott 3, Sherman 1

The Skyhawks traveled across Drawdy Mountain to defeat the Tide on May 1 in the Boone County rivals' regular-season finale.

Earning the win for Scott was Prince, who threw six innings before Akers relieved him for the final frame.

Senior T.J. Waters was 1-for-3 with a home run for Scott. Prince had a double.

Suffering the loss for the host Tide was junior Josh Hapney, who pitched a complete game.

Freshman Jake Halstead led Sherman with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

Scott 12, Valley Fayette 11

The Skyhawks bounced back from a loss the day before to defeat the Greyhounds on April 30.

Sophomore Tyler Thompson, Prince and Runyan combined for mound duties in the victory.

Scott collected 18 hits, including five from Gibson (5-for-5 with four RBI and two home runs). Waters went 3-for-4. Senior David Howard was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI.

Buffalo Putnam 6, Scott 3

The Skyhawks suffered a devasting defeat against the Bison on April 29.

Suffering the loss for the Skyhawks was sophomore pitcher Tyler Ramsey.

Leading the Skyhawks' offense was Ramsey (2-for-3), followed by Price (2-for-4) and Akers (2-for-4). Thompson (2-for-3) and Prince (1-for-2) rounded out the Scott attack.

Scott 10, Liberty Raleigh 0

Liberty Raleigh 13, Scott 8

The Skyhawks split a doubleheader with the Raiders on April 26.

Earning the win for Scott was Prince, who pitched a complete game.

The top hitters for Scott were Akers (4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI), junior Dale Holstein (4-for-4) and Gibson (3-for-3).

Suffering the loss for Scott was Thompson, who threw four innings.

Poca 8, Scott 7

The Skyhawks fell to the Dots on April 25.

Fayetteville 14, Scott 8

The Skyhawks fell to the Pirates on April 16.

The top hitters for Scott were Akers (3-for-5 with two doubles and one triple), Price (5-for-5 with two RBI) and Holstein (2-for-4).

Brighton, N.Y. 17, Scott 9

The Skyhawks lost to their out-of-state opponent on April 14.

The top hitters for Scott were Akers (2-for-5 with two runs), Price (2-for-4 with one RBI), Gibson (2-for-4 with one double) and Runyan (home run).

In other Boone County baseball action last week, Sherman's season came to an end with back-to-back losses in the double-elimination Class AA Region 4 Section 2 tournament at Winfield High School.

Halstead had a triple and a pair of RBI in a 7-4 loss to Winfield last Tuesday. Junior Jeff Elian was 2-for-3 with a double for the Tide. Junior Jason Baldwin went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Hapney suffered the loss for Sherman, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and four errors.

Hapney (2-for-3), sophomore Michael Massey (2-for-3) and senior Drake Vanoy (2-for-4) were the bright spots for Sherman in an 8-2 loss to Poca last Monday.

Junior Mark Cooper took the loss for the Tide.
