Seven miners suffered injuries following an accident during a shift change Friday evening at the Round Bottom Mine in Sylvester.

A spokeswoman with MSHA said that on Oct. 10 a man trip derailed at Elk Run Coal Company. Several miners were taken to the hospital. It was initially reported that one may have broken an ankle and two complained of back pain. None of the injuries are life-threatening.

According to reports, the accident happened near the entrance of the mine at approximately 11:45 p.m. during the end of the miners’ night shift.

Authorities say the miners were on the man trip when it jumped the tracks and crashed. MSHA investigators are actively investigating the cause of the accident.

Several of the miners suffered broken bones, although none of the miners’ injuries appear to be life threatening, according to Boone County emergency responders.

Rescue crews were able to transport five miners by ambulance to the hospital. Two of the seven miners were flown via HealthNet to CAMC for treatment.
